iPhone 3.0 “Captive Portal” Solution is Security Risk
The remote-exploit blog is reporting that Apple’s iPhone 3.0 creates a security risk by automatically opening the Safari web browser when the system detects a captive portal.
The exploit would require a hostile network, but this threat is very real for people who “steal” other user’s unsecured wireless network access.

Tarnishing the Apple
Just in time for my trip to the Apple store to day to have my MBP repaired (more after its return), the Washington Post ran this story describing the pains of going to an Apple retail store.
Apple will allow third-party applications for iPhone
According to the Internation Herald Tribune, Apple has announced that it will open up the iPhone to 3rd party application developers.
Who didn’t know this was coming?

Slow News Day
Apparently, Apple is planning to make some sort of announcement today. This is the headline from washingtonpost.com I fail to see how this is news, but all the free PR Apple gets from the large media companies must save them a fortune in advertising costs.
UPDATE: Big surprise, it’s a new iPod. You can read about it at the Washington Post. Don’t want to read about it at the Post? You can also read about it at the New York Times or BBC. Le Monde probably won’t go to press until tomorrow.
Ecto 3 Alpha
I’ve just downloaded the alpha release of Adriaan Tijsseling’s ecto blogging software. It’s a revamped version of ecto2, although “ecto3 is not ecto2″.
Among the new features, ecto3 includes a new rich-text editor, as well as support for a number of other blog APIs.
That’s about all I have right now. I’m just posting to test it out.
Out of Touch
My Macbook Pro power adapter went up in a puff of smoke last night. I was typing on my computer when I smelled the distinct aroma of burning plastic. I looked at my computer and, behold, there was smoke coming from the magsafe connector. The computer itself is fine, but it no longer has any juice. It’s going to be about a week or so before it’s replaced (not sure why it takes so long, but I’m just glad AppleCare works out here, too).
This is probably the best time that this could happen. I’m leaving Thursday to explore parts of France, Belgium, and Luxembourg (time/money permitting). I wasn’t planning on taking my computer with me, but I wasn’t certain. Now, it seems, Apple has decided for me. Expect updates after the weekend.
iTunes Introduces Complete My Album
Apple announces today that it will add a new feature to the iTunes Music Store (iTMS) called Complete My Album. The premise of this features is that people should not be penalized for trying out an album by buying only on track, only to have to buy the track again in order to gain access to “Album Only” content. This feature is only valid for six months after the initial purchase, but that should be a sufficient period of time for most listeners.
I was actually looking for this sort of feature just recently. This move should strengthen the iTMS business model.
