Revisionist history once again
20 December 2005 | 08h24This isn’t a major piece of history; it will not appear in any history books. This is, however, an example of how easy it is to ignore nuance.
In the press conference given by President Bush
yesterday, he stated that a leak to the press was responsible for Osama bin Laden’s discontinuation of his satellite phone; however, no such leak seems to have ever occurred. A number of newspapers, not just the Washington Times as indicated in the linked article, published similar statements regarding bin Laden in the wake of the embassy bombings and corresponding U.S. missile strikes. In none of these articles (which I will admit I did not read everything that came up in a quick LexisNexis search) did it appear that the information was based upon any U.S. government source. It was based upon this old-fashioned art called journalism.
