Finally! An actual computer crime!

31 October 2005 | 19h59

I’m waiting for lawsuits on this one. Mark Russinovich over at Sysinternals have found that Sony is installing a rootkit on Windows machines. By definition, a is malicious code that is installed without permission. Apparently, the code is poorly written and easily exploitable by others.

Now that the word is out, expect a new wave of computer viruses.

Monday Morning Update

| 07h17

I’m posting just to let everyone know I’m alive. It’s been a busy weekend. I have a three-day weekend at the end of this week, so there is a silver lining to this dark, cold Monday. Only a few weeks left in the semester!

Note. The TV is telling me that Samuel Alito, judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, will be the next nominee for the Supreme Court. Should make for an interesting media debate…

Driving the beltway is HOT?

27 October 2005 | 07h12

I don’t normally discuss local traffic news, but today’s Washington Post discusses plans by Maryland and Virginia to install toll lanes on the beltway.

For those who aren’t local, I-495 hosts some of the worst traffic in the nation. The road feeding from 495 to I-270 is not much better. Virginia’s plan, I think, could improve the flow of traffic up the beltway. Virginia is proposing to add High-Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes to 495 along one of the busiest segments. This HOV/toll road hybrid would tax anyone who wanted to ride this road, unless that person brought two of his closest friends. A similar plan might work well in Maryland. I can imagine this plan would work, considering how many people who would gladly play to get home 30-90 minutes sooner.

This could work, given another peculiar habit.

Cert. Denied

26 October 2005 | 17h46

According to the Post, the U.S. Supreme Court denied Blackberry maker RIM’s appeal from a Court of Appeals ruling. The maker of the ubiquitous device had been sued by NTP Inc. for patent infringement in 2003 for violating five (5) patents held by NTP.

Is this finally the end of the Blackberry?
